Week 5: Preparing the home for Christmas

And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth. – John 1:14

Have you ever felt as though your house is bursting at its seams during Christmas? This time of the year is when we bring in more things into our home, from decorations to gifts and even more food than usual if we host dinners and parties. As a result, things get piled up everywhere, on chairs, tables, countertops and all over the floors.

Here is a tip to help us manage our home and start as early as today. All we need to do is to prepare our house, have it cleared out and cleaned up beforehand. There are a few areas in which we need to declutter and clear out some space. Let’s get started.

The first is to clean up the areas we want to display our decorations, such as the countertops, shelves, side tables, foyer tables, and coffee tables. Start by clearing the current decor items by keeping them in boxes for the next season. If there are any items that we do not want, remember to donate, sell or give. Then, wipe the surface down, and it is ready to be decorated.

Next, take some time in the week to go through the children’s toys, clothes and remove any items that are no longer needed—cleaning up the closet and toy box to make space for some new things from the Christmas gifts.

Last but not least, don’t forget the pantry, freezer and fridge. With Christmas around the corner, we need to prepare the space to stock up extra food and party supplies for hosting guests.

Start by going through and throwing away any expired foods.

Next, donate any foods you do not want, which are not open to the food bank.

Lastly, organise and wipe down the space. Now there is clean space ready to be used.
