You don’t need to walk alone.

Perfecting our lives by controlling our tongues

Indeed, we all make many mistakes. For if we could control our tongues, we would be perfect and could also control ourselves in every other way. (James 3:2, NLT)

Have you found yourself reacting to certain people? As for me, I caught myself responding to stupid questions thrown at me. They irritate me, and my mind becomes confused. Often, I became careless with my words. I can’t entirely agree with my behaviour, and I’m putting efforts to improve this area of my life.

So what’s one lesson did I pick up from James 3:2? It’s about learning to control my tongues. According to his advice, when I learn to control my tongue, gradually I would become perfected and could control other areas of life. It’s a small adjustment to life, but when it’s done right, the impact of positive change is massive.

Is this exercise easy? Not at all. But it is achievable. When it’s done right regularly, it will bring about blessings, not just to myself but people around me.

I’m especially drawn to the wisdom of Apostle James. His teachings are practical. Simple to follow but not necessarily easy to apply. But if you and I could use his knowledge, I believe our lives will change for the better.

Our tongues may be a small member of the body, but it can bring forth either life or death. God uses words to create the entire universe. Jesus used words to bring Lazarus back to life after three days in the tomb. Life-giving words flow through our tongues. I believe God is going to increase the anointing of spoken words when we improve and control our tongues.

Let us pray

Dearest Holy Spirit, let the fear of the Lord increase in my conscious and subconscious minds. Grace my strength and self-control so I could discipline my tongue. I pray that You would touch, sanctify and use it to glorify the Father. In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen!
