3 Simple Ways to Increase Spiritual Hunger

Spiritual hunger is the desire or craving for more of God and spiritual activities. It is the yearning for deeper communion with God and a passion for His word. Just like physical hunger, spiritual hunger is essential for growth and sustenance in the Christian faith. A spiritually healthy person will always have an insatiable desire for more of God.

In Luke 4:4, Jesus says, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.” This verse emphasizes the importance of spiritual hunger in the life of a Christian. Just as physical hunger drives us to seek food, spiritual hunger drives us to seek God and His word.

A person recovering from an illness may have a restored appetite, but an ill and sickly person may have no appetite at all. Similarly, a spiritually healthy person will have a strong desire for God and spiritual activities, while a spiritually sick person may have little or no appetite for spiritual things.

The Bible encourages us to seek after God and to hunger for His presence. In Psalm 42:1-2, the psalmist says, “As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?” This verse describes the deep longing of the psalmist’s soul for God’s presence. It is a picture of a person who is spiritually hungry and thirsting for God.

There are several ways to increase spiritual hunger:

  1. Spend time in prayer and fasting: Fasting is a way to deny our physical appetite and focus on our spiritual hunger for God. In Matthew 6:16, Jesus says, “When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.” Fasting is a way to draw closer to God and increase our hunger for Him.
  2. Meditate on God’s word: In Joshua 1:8, God commands Joshua to meditate on His word day and night. Meditating on God’s word is a way to deepen our understanding of God and increase our hunger for Him. As we meditate on God’s word, we discover more of His character and His love for us, which fuels our hunger for Him.
  3. Surround yourself with like-minded believers: In Hebrews 10:25, the Bible instructs us to not forsake the assembling of ourselves together. When we gather with other believers, we are encouraged and strengthened in our faith. Being around others who share our hunger for God can help us stay focused on Him and increase our desire for more of Him.

In conclusion, spiritual hunger is a vital component of a healthy Christian life. Just as physical hunger drives us to seek food, spiritual hunger drives us to seek God and His word. To increase our spiritual hunger, we can spend time in prayer and fasting, meditate on God’s word, and surround ourselves with like-minded believers. As we hunger for God, He will fill us with more of Himself, and we will experience exponential growth in our faith.
